Phosphor Bronze C510 vs. C544: Choosing Alloys for Springs, Contacts, and Bushings
When a part needs to flex millions of times without fatiguing, carry current, and survive corrosive environments, engineers often reach for phosphor bronze. These copper–tin alloys, deoxidized with a small amount of phosphorus, occupy a sweet spot between strength and formability that few other alloys match.
What Makes Phosphor Bronze Different
Tin strengthens copper through solid-solution hardening, while phosphorus deoxidizes the melt and improves fluidity and wear resistance. The result is an alloy family with high fatigue strength, excellent spring properties, and good resistance to stress-corrosion cracking. The Copper Development Association catalogs the full family from C50500 through C54400.
C510 vs. C544 at a Glance
| Property | C51000 (Grade A) | C54400 (Free-Machining) |
|---|---|---|
| Nominal composition | Cu, ~5% Sn, P | Cu, ~4% Sn, ~4% Pb, ~4% Zn, P |
| Primary strength | Spring properties, fatigue | Machinability, wear |
| Machinability rating | ~20 (vs. C360 = 100) | ~80 |
| Electrical conductivity | ~15% IACS | ~19% IACS |
| Common forms | Strip, sheet, wire | Rod, bar |
When to Specify C510
- Electrical contacts and connector springs that must maintain contact force over many cycles.
- Bellows, diaphragms, and clips where fatigue life drives design.
- Fasteners and lock washers in corrosive or marine service.
C510 is typically supplied in strip and sheet and specified to ASTM B103.
When to Specify C544
- Bushings and thrust washers that are turned on screw machines.
- Valve stems, gears, and pinions requiring wear resistance and tight tolerances.
- Electrical terminals machined from rod.
The lead addition in C544 gives it far better chip breaking — but also means it isn't suitable for applications with lead restrictions. Rod and bar are covered by ASTM B139.
How Phosphor Bronze Compares to Bearing Bronzes
For heavy-load sleeve bearings, cast bearing bronzes like C932 or aluminum bronze C954 usually outperform phosphor bronze. See our guide to C932 vs. C954 bearing alloys for that comparison.
